Academic & Business Writing - Week 1 Assignment

Over the next few weeks I will be posting my journal assignment from my Academic & Business writing course here. Please enjoy.

I am currently a published novelist who primarily writes novels. Within the realms of fiction I am also write poetry, screenplays and stage plays. My current focus is that of novel writing of which I am preparing my 4th novel to be published and writing my 7th novel as well. From a non-fiction perspective, until Covid-19 killed the live entertainment industry in which I work, my writing primarily took on the form of emails between myself and my technical team. It would have progressed into memo's, procedures and policies as the job traversed further into development.

I love writing. For the most part. In particular I love fictional writing. I love creating stories for people to read. However, like most writers, I dread the re-drafting process. Not because I think my writing is perfect (but it is brilliant) but because of the time it endures to polish it. Its not only a matter of rewriting scenes, or writing new scenes but tearing my story apart from a technical perspective and justifying what I have written. While the end result is a much better story I just dislike how long it takes. I also love writing challenges. One of my biggest issues in a non fiction sense is how I just go on and on. So the challenge of writing an email then having to condense it down so I don't bore the recipient is as pleasing as it is displeasing to me.

I need to work on being more concise and saying more with less. And not letting my fictional side take over when writing something concrete. I have a tendency to elaborate too much. I also need to learn how to be more concrete and technical with my writing.
